"You're Signing Up For Football!!!"
by Mary Stephen
(Madison, Indiana USA)
I just graduated from 6th grade at my little town school when I moved to this big huge school with just 800 kids in 7th and 8th grade.
I always had this feeling for playing football and they had football so I thought I would try to play football. I went to the principle and told her that I wanted to sign up for football so she gave me the form to sign up and the concussion papers.
She told me and my mom that the football coach and the football team had a game that day, and that I could go talk to him right now if we wanted to.
So we were walking down the hallway. My heart already fell out of my butt! We walked up to the door. And no exaggeration the whole room with at least 40 football guys went dead quiet when we walked in. The best part about the whole thing was that my mom had my brother on the front of her in a baby carrier. And we walked up to the coach and he spit up all over my mom!
While we were talking to the coach I turned around at all the football players and literally they were all staring at us.
I hurried up and turned back around and I heard giggling.
My face turned red and I listened to the coach and what I had to do. After we talked tot he coach the rest of the week I had everybody in school asking me " Are you really playing football!", "Are you sure you want to play, you're going to get a lot of crap."
On my first day of practice I had to go get my equipment from inside the boy's locker room. Me and the coach went in there and he was getting my chest plate when a cockroach about 2 inches long with a 1 inch red butt. After we got the chest plate on and my cleats. I walked out side and every boy was looking at me. It was at that point I decided that I was going to play football.
I was the first girl in my towns history to play on a boy's football team being a girl. The best part was we were undefeated!!
