Top 10 Greatest Inspirational Quotes
by Steve M Nash
How impossible is it, really, to choose the 10 greatest inspirational quotes of all time, eh? Such a top 10 quotes would have to be completely subjective, completely reflective of a person's journey (so far), and completely incomplete as a means to fully describing the joy and the pain that is the human condition...
Still. Here you are. About to read my version of the top 10 greatest inspirational quotes, together with my reasons why these quotes are great, why embracing these quotes, embodying them, CAN transform your life
- some fantastic inspirational quotes (perhaps your favourite quotation?) couldn't quite make it, so were converted into images.
- And some great inspirational quotes didn't make it because I forgot to consider them (I mean, nothing by Einstein? - tch!).
- And some great inspirational quotes didn't make it to the list below because I've never even heard of 'em in the first place. (Share your favourite quotes below, with reasons why, here!)
Anyway, enough! After reviewing 1000s and 1000s of quotations, drum roll please, these are my top 10 greatest inspirational quotes of ALL time...
GREATEST QUOTES: #10
"I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better." -- Maya Angelou
On the face of it, Maya Angelou's words are not that impressive, not that inspirational. On the face of it, other inspirational quotes by Maya Angelou are greater (I love her words, for example, about the reason a bird sings its song).
But wait, consider this: Believe it or not, you are always doing your best! Even that worst moment was your best, at the time. (And if this isn't making sense to you I highly recommend you check out Michael Neill's Supercoach.com - it's a kind of loving spiritual self-help, where he advocates an 'Inside-Out approach' to living a great liife!)
Do you see what these words by Maya Angelou mean? Like it or not, you, me and everyone are doing the best they know how! And if we forget about all the crime and horror in the world, and instead focus on those times in your life when YOU feel that you let yourself down, those times that you regret.
Well, now there's no need for regret, you were doing the best you can!
By all means learn to do better, but forgive yourself, and do so now...
Another great inspirational quote that sums this need for forgiveness is this one:
"To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness."
-- Robert Muller
Inspiring Action: FORGIVE (YOURSELF)!
GREATEST QUOTES: #9
"You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection." -- Buddha
With the world so low on self-esteem right now (has it ever been any different?), isn't it a comfort to know that we really do deserve to love ourselves with ALL we've got. The Buddha says so, and so do I.
And if you think this self-love all sounds a bit selfish well you'd be right. Kind of. How can you help (serve/love) someone else if you've not helped (served/loved) yourself?
Why do the airlines repeatedly urge us to give ourselves oxygen first - in the unlikely event of a plane crash! - before giving others oxygen? Because if you don't sort yourself out you're of no help to others (you'll pass out from lack of oxygen, in this example).
This is not about narcissism, this is about love - love of self. And you deserve to love yourself, you really do...
Another great inspirational quote that sums this up is this:
"Self-love is the source of all our other loves."
-- Pierre Corneille
Inspiring Action: LOVE YOURSELF
GREATEST QUOTES: #8
"Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he can and should be, and he will become as he can and should be." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
And as important as it is to love yourself, and forgive yourself for not always living up to your highest of expectations of yourself, it's important for you to do this with your fellow woman.
And can you imagine how powerful it would be to view another, even another that you don't care for that much, through the eyes of someone looking for their greatness, rather than their 'faultiness'?
After all, we see what we look for, don't we! And if we look for the best in someone, we'll soon start to find it. Which will feel so much nicer for you, I'm sure - noticing someone's qualities, rather than their faults - and it'll feel pretty nice too for the person concerned!... (By the way, I'll let you into secret of the human condition, shall I! When you look for the best in someone else, something rather remarkable happens to what you look for in yourself!)
Another greatest inspirational quote that talks about the importance of others in your life is this one:
"Everyone on earth has a gift just for you."
-- Guy Finley
Inspiring Action: LOVE OTHERS
NOTE: As regards these greatest inspirational quotes... this is how I see it. I may well not see things as you do, but all I can do is share how I see things, right now!
