Inspirational Being Yourself Quotes...

Ah, being yourself... what could be easier! I mean, surely it's easier to be yourself than to be someone else, or is it?...

Well, ask people that know me - from acquaintances to good friends - and most will agree on one thing: Steve is an individual, he has a style of his own (read: Steve is good at being himself).

And I would agree with them, wholeheartedly, I really would. I've spent all of my life accepting who I am, developing my individual voice, even when it meant feeling on the edge of things because I didn't fit in! I think for myself (I work things out for myself), and I most certainly am not a follower of fashion - any kind (and, believe me, there are many things that are fashionable to do, think or feel, in this world).

Still, after all this, I often am not myself - I try to be someone else (someone who doesn't disagree with you, someone you might like, someone you might even find attractive in a romantic sense).

And sometimes I just don't know that I'm not being myself - so engrained are the patterns of thinking and feeling, that I believe they are my own, when they are not.

So, I really do know that the mantra of 'just be yourself' is a hard one to follow, for most of us it really is. (I even gave a speech about it, at my local Toastmasters - the basis of which can be found here at EzineArticles.)

And I also know that this journey to your true self (or even True Self), this being who you truly are, is the only journey worth being on (in my humble opinion). And I'm proud of the progress I make and continue to make. I'm pleased that more and more I am learning to simply sing my song...

This issue's contribution is an anonymous contribution, by someone who enjoys reading the stories of others but feels he/she cannot share their own right now. It's called 'Sorry, But...' and that really is all there is to it.

Being your Self, or your "selfless Self"?
by: Anonymous

Hi Steve,

I love your topic for the monthly marvel! It somehow has a very "Zen-Buddhist" touch to it which I like, being a "Buddhist" myself (can you tell me how to define that?). Is my Buddhist "Self" really different from my real self? As with other sects and religions, "labels" tend to be played with a lot, simply for the sake of "toying" with different versions/notions of our selves (to feed our ego's notion of our selves), which reminds me that we are actually very child-like too. We try to conform to all kinds of "standards", which are a reflection of how we've been brought up (conditioned) and a product of our collective "standard-setting". But we yearn for "simplicity", innocence of heart/mind, without the "oppression" of ego's dictating to us a distorted notion of who we are.

Yet, it seems this shifting from one extreme (non-self) to another (self) seems to be a kind of entertainment/preoccupation (for its own sake) source, to make us believe we really are real after all, (which we aren't) right?

"Remember who you are" is one of my favorite quips.

Some Buddhists say there's 2 kinds of self : a "cognitive" and a non-cognitive one, a thinking and a non-thinking one. Or a "devoted" vs. a "cynical" one!

My "cynical" take on that is, there's a selfish vs. a selfless Self, both "Selves" which, in themselves, are selfless! I guess I'm so into the "word-games" of Self, than in trying to figure out what the hell it is!

Hope this hasn't sounded too vague, esoteric, "airy-fairy", or "philoso-fickle".

Which reminds/challenges me how this is connected to the previous Mo.-Marvel theme : leading by example! What is the "Leading Self"? Or the non-leading one, for that matter.

Thanks for the inspirational quotes, and thanks for letting me share!

Best, Hanson G.
