Benefits of Positive Thinking

Home >> Positive Attitude >> Benefits

"Your thoughts control your world!"

I'm not sure who made this mind over matter statement about thinking, but I agree with it!

And... "A positive attitude leads to a life that is more enjoyable!"

I agree with this statement too!

As well as the other benefits of a positive attitude that you'll read about below in Cindy Holbrook's article.

Having a positive mental attitude is no cure to the ills of your world, I agree, and being positive isn't always easy, but I do believe that having a positive attitude is much better than being negative.

And I should know - I spent most of my life with a negative attitude.

Anyway, read on, and (as ever) let me know your thoughts! ;-)

Positive thinking - what I say...

My whole journey into self-help ( or self-improvement, personal development - call it what you will) all began several years ago when I first noticed my own negativity! Not only did I realise that I had a negative attitude to what happened in my life, etc. - much worse was the fact that it had been like this all my life!

So I started reading a book called Personal Progress Through Positive Thinking (still available at Amazon UK & Amazon.com, I think) and my life began to change, in a positive way!

And now I truly understand the question, "Is the glass half empty or half full?" and the meaning of the answer.

It's about your attitude to what happens in your life. It's about your attitude to what you expect to happen in your life. It's about your attitude to what has already happened in your life.

You can either choose to accentuate the positive (and eliminate the negative) or not! But positive thinking is a choice!

It's a very important choice, actually. You only have to look at this collection of words that are associated with 'positive thinking', for example:

lung cancer, fibromyalgia, ibs, cancer, job search,
breast cancer, self improvement, arthritis, poverty,
anxiety, fatigue, exercise, outlook, chronic, feelings,
addiction, causes, pain, medicine, negative,
disorder, optimism, success

It seems positive thinking has a lot to answer for!

And when life isn't going as well as you'd like it to, the last thing you want to be told is that you need to adopt a positive mental attitude. Yes, I can fully understand the resistance to all things 'positive attitude' that some people feel - especially when the virtues of the power of positive thinking are being shared by the often preachy (and always successful) 'mind over matter' brigade!

Still. And even though I understand this resistance. I firmly believe that a life lived whilst having a positive attitude will be more fulfilling, more enjoyable and just 'more' than a life lived without a positive thinking attitude!

Can I prove it? Well, if you need me to prove the benefits of a positive attitude to you then I can't, no. As Henry Ford once said:

"Whether you think you can or you think you can't you are right!"
(More positive attitude quotes here!)

Which is pretty much what Michael Jordan is saying in this motivational quote:

"I can accept failure -- everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying."

Still, what I can do, though, is let Cindy Holbrook talk about the benefits of positive thinking.

And I am glad to let her do so. And not because I am always positive - I'm not, far from it! But because I believe positive thinking - like overcoming fear, having a healthy self-esteem, being assertive - can make all of our lives 'more'.

So I do hope you enjoy what Cindy Holbrook has to say.

And whether you do or whether you don't - please let us know! :-)

9 Benefits of Positive Thinking

Positive thinking - what Cindy Holbrook has to say...

Positive thinking is not the phony-baloney it was once believed to be. Numerous studies over recent years have shown that optimistic thinking leads to a positive attitude. People with positive attitudes live longer happier healthier lives.

Thinking positive is a choice.

With practice it becomes a habit that will reap the following benefits:

1. Feel Better - When you're positive you'll feel better about yourself and life in general. It's impossible to feel positive and negative at the same time - so the more positive you are, the more positive feelings will come. You'll feel more peaceful, happier and calmer.

2. Obtain a Healthy Self-Esteem - Know and truly believe that you are a valuable person and have something to offer. Trust in yourself and your decisions.

3. Develop Positive Habits - When you feel good about yourself it's easier to develop positive habits such as exercising, eating right, quitting smoking, eliminating procrastination etc.

4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest - You'll have increased energy to enable you to achieve more in less time. Think about good happy things you want to happen and in time they will come to pass.

5. Be in Control of Your Destiny - Everyone's lives are shaped by what they think about most often. You can have the life you've always dreamed of as you continue to take action towards your goals.

6. Better Coping Skills - Hard times will come, they are inevitable. When you're a positive person it will be easier to handle these situations.

7. Decreased Stress - Everyday hassles that may have seemed traumatic to you in the past will just seem to roll off your back. You'll have fewer problems with work and other daily activities caused by poor physical or emotional health.

8. Improved Health - Studies have shown that your physical health is influenced by your mental health. Research also shows that positive people experience less pain and fewer limitations when engaging in social activities.

9. Improved Relationships - You'll attract positive people in your life. When you're feeling good, people want to be around you more. The more you show gratitude and love for others, the more you'll receive.

Make a conscious choice - today and every day - to think positively. Keep in mind that unpleasant or bad events are only temporary. You may not be able to control the situation - but you can control your thoughts and attitude.
