Do you really have a positive attitude?

Great! So you won't need to read this page about positive attitude then, nor will you need to read any of the positive attitude articles either?

There really would be nothing to see here, would there!

The fact is, however positive (or negative) we are, we all could do with a reminder every now and then about how much better life is when we are positive.

That does not mean we are never down! It just means the downs last for less time and the ups are recognised and appreciated more fully! Yep, it's good being positive! :-)

So, knowing time is precious and all, I'm going to keep this page about developing positive attitudes short. Now that is positive news, eh! ;-)

Enjoy. And do get in touch - I love to hear your comments.

And now, some talking trees...

Positive Attitude

Positive attitude - what I say...

The very first self-help book I ever bought (years ago) was called, Personal Progress through Positive Thinking by Hilary Jones and Frank Gilbert. Clearly, I thought my main 'problem' was a lack of positivity. And I was right - my attitudes were very negative at the time - but the book didn't really help me that much(*).

I guess I wasn't ready.

Still, I remembered one thing from the book, "Choose to be positive."

And quite often I did (and do), choose to be positive. Not that it's easy changing the negative habits of a lifetime - it isn't. But the fact that I now believe that I can choose how I think and feel really does make a difference to me and my attitude to life.

"Failure is an event, not a person. Yesterday ended last night."
-- Zig Ziglar

Like most self help, though, you really can't be told how to do something. Somehow, you've got to discover the wisdom for yourself.

So what positive attitude tips do I have for you?

Hmm, well I'm not sure about this 'blind leading the blind' routine, but how about one of these positivity tidbits:

  • I believe that I, like most people, are far more capable than I (and others) give me credit for. I believe that 'having a go' is far more important than thinking 'I can't do that' even if, in the end, you fail. I believe that we all underestimate ourselves and each other and we really shouldn't! That's what I believe (what do you believe?)

  • Laughter or smiling - whether you laugh or smile, or you make someone else laugh or smile - is one of the best ways to make a positive difference to yourself and to others.

  • "I can, I will and I am doing". Yes, I believe in positive affirmations just as long as they're followed up by positive actions

Not bad, eh, from off the top of my head!

I bet you have more positivity tips, though - don't you? Or I bet you know a thing or two about developing a positive attitude. Do let us know!

Positive attitude - what they say...

Firstly, what's the definition of a positive attitude? Let's understand what we are all talking about. Well, Wikipedia kind of helps with this definition of optimism: "Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. People would say that optimism is seeing the glass "half full" of water as opposed to half empty. It is the philosophical opposite of pessimism."

A more positive statement from Wikipedia about attitude is this one: "ATTITUDE is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's like or dislike for an item. Attitudes are positive, negative or neutral views of an "attitude object": i.e. a person, behaviour or event. People can also be "ambivalent" towards a target, meaning that they simultaneously possess a positive and a negative bias towards the attitude in question."

Hmm, I guess I'm going to have to go to another self-help website to find the definition of a positive attitude. (D'oh!)

What do I think the definition is? Well, I know if I've got a positive attitude when I look forward to doing something, even if I've never done it before, or when I enjoy doing what I'm doing right now! (I don't wish away my life.) The thing is, I just know when I'm being positive and I certainly recognise my negative thought processes...

The benefits of a positive attitude?

Well, "You may not be as young as you feel, but research has found that a positive attitude may delay the ageing process." That's what the BBC seem to think, and they should know, shouldn't they? This BBC article on positive thinking goes on to say, "...it may that an upbeat attitude helps to boost a person's health by making it more likely they will be successful in life."

Living longer is not the only benefit to having a positive attitude, though.

"Positive psychology studies indicate a positive attitude, along with an optimistic outlook and positive thinking, can bring better health and greater happiness." That's according to this power of positive attitude article on Suite101.com

So, better health and happiness - just by being more positive. Wow, we should all be doing this! Lol

But wait, there's more (according to SuccessConsciousness)...

The benefits of a positive attitude:

  • Success achieved faster and more easily.
  • More energy.
  • The ability to inspire and motivate yourself and others.
  • Fewer difficulties encountered along the way.
  • Life smiles at you.
  • People respect you.
    etc.

A positive mental attitude can really give you all that. Such are the powers of a positive attitude.

The trick is, I guess, in developing a positive attitude. It can be done, it really can. And the key word: can.

"It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded."
--Anne Morrow Lindbergh

"Forget mistakes. Forget failure. Forget everything except what you are going to do now and do it. Today is your lucky day." -- Will Durant

(Thank you, Will! :-) )

"You are the most important asset you have; treat yourself accordingly."
-- Lucy MacDonald

Positive attitude - what Howard Platt says...

Howard shares his self-help story (as you can too - share your story) all about the power of positive thinking overcoming bad health. Hope you enjoy! :-)

Over to Howard...

I jumped into the field of personal development over 25 years ago after reading a book about personal development. I credit all I have learned to getting me through a host of personal and medical problems. You can read the full story at http://positive-thinking-for-you.com

A quick summary of what I had to overcome would be 6 brain tumors and 11 surgeries followed by years of violent seizures. Within the last year I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder resulting in a permanent trach in my throat so I can breathe. The loss of my voice really inhibiting my communication. Followed by some unforeseen personal problems. But like I said you can read the whole story at my positive thinking website.

I will tell you this though, it's my knowledge in the personal development field that got me through everything....well that and God! God being first of course. I do truly feel blessed just to be here.

Positive attitude - what this fab video on YouTube says...

"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. Its about learning to dance in the rain."

What do YOU think?

Do tell us what you think about the issue of positive attitude . Oh, and please rate this page - thanks. :-)
