Happiness AND love?

You don't ask for much, do you! Actually, there are many that think that peace, happiness and love are related - i.e. you can't have one without the other. Let's hope so, anyway, as that's what this page is all about:

  • Find a list of happiness quotes and love quotations (occasionally with my own comments added) to help with your understanding

  • Watch the amazing Marc Brousard singing Al Green's 'Love and Happiness' song - fantastic

  • And (hopefully!) discover 'what is happiness' whilst you're at it...

Love and Happiness Quotations

Love and happiness - what they (and I) have to say...

"In life, we must not look to make ourselves happy, but instead, we must strive to love others and our own happiness will come of their satisfaction."
-- Paul Acquasanta

"The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved - loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves."

-- Victor Hugo

"Love is trembling happiness."

-- Kahlil Gibran

(That sounds like my kind of happiness, Kahlil. What do you think?)

"The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for."

-- Allan K. Chalmers

"There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved."

-- George Sand

(I understand what George means here, but I'm not sure he's talking about loving a spouse or partner, but loving a friend or a family member and especially yourself. And life would be tough if nobody loved you, absolutely no-one - even that sibling you argue with loves you! Hmm.)

"Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude."

-- Denis Waitley

(Denis, you win my competition for favourite love & happiness quote! I think you know you're happy when you notice the little things in life - a bird singing, the pattern on your wallpaper, strangers having a laugh together, etc. - and it makes you smile.

Hey, why don't you tell me what your favourite quotes is here, and why!)

"What counts in making a happy relationship is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility."

-- Daniel Goleman

"It doesn't matter how long we may have been stuck in a sense of our limitations. If we go into a darkened room and turn on the light, it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for a day, a week, or ten thousand years - we turn on the light and it is illuminated. Once we control our capacity for love and happiness, the light has been turned on."

-- Sharon Salzberg

(Wow, that is quite profound, Sharon! At least to me. Controlling our capacity for love and happiness is possible and something you can continue to do once started? Wow! What do you think?)

"Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps the most fatal to true happiness."

-- Bertrand Russell

(More love and happiness comin' at ya!... )

"Life is to be fortified by many friendships. To love and to be loved is the greatest happiness of existence."

-- Sydney Smith

(I think someone might have copied Sydney's quote (see above), or maybe it's the other way around? Maybe great minds do think alike!)

"Love is a condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own."

-- Robert Heinlein

"Happiness comes when your work and words are of benefit to yourself and others."

-- Unknown

"When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace."

-- Dalai Lama

"Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness."

-- Oliver Wendell Holmes

(And allowing love into your life, allowing yourself to be great even, is what all of the recommended personal growth tools enable you to do.)

"The essentials to happiness are something to love, something to do, and something to hope for."

-- William Blake

(Hmm, I think I've read that quote before too. Maybe happiness is not noticing when your spouse or partner starts repeating themselves in conversation! Hee hee. What do you think?)

"We've got to convince our egos and our minds that if we want to live happy lives, love is more important than anything else!"

-- Ken Keyes

(That ego of ours is a tricky customer to deal with, though. And I'm not a fan of banishing my ego to the back of beyond, either...)

"Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it."

-- Mary Baker Eddy

Thank you Mary for that beautiful thought. Could this be your favourite quotation? Well, even if it isn't, it would be great if you shared your favourite quotation with us - you can do so here!

Love and Happiness - what Marc Broussard has to say...

I love this YouTube video It helps that I like the music, I admit (an Al Green cover), but I think the video does a top job of illustrating the highs and lows of love & happiness also.
