Favorite Quote is by Sir Winston Churchill

by Gail Weiss
(Englewood, FL, USA)

"Never in the field of conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." -- Winston Churchill

My favorite quotation is this one by Sir Winston Churchill.

I love this quote because it is anti-war.

And every time I see the photos and names of military personnel killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, Churchill's famous inspirational quote comes to mind.

Um... No... Not an anti-war quote...
by: Anonymous

The quote is most assuredly NOT anti-war. It was giving credit to those individuals who fought to protect the masses from the German advances.

In saying that never before had so much been owed to so few, Churchill was saying that the livelihood of a nation had rested on the shoulders of a small number of indivuduals.

It follows the same line of thought as the idea that "people sleep peaceably in their beds at night because rough men stand by to do violence on their behalf."

Credit is due to the defenders... it is their sacrifice that allows us the peace that we enjoy.

Antiwar quote or not by Winston Churchill
by: Anonymous

Hi Steve,

This is an intelligent question of yours.
Unfortunately, I could not answer it.
Somebody should know much about Winston Churchill to be able to give an interpretation of the quote.

Anti-war? Hmm...
by: Steve

Winston Churchill was certainly an inspirational leader, especially in wartime, and your favorite quote is a powerful one, for sure (aimed at the Allied aircrew of the RAF).

But I'd be very surprised if Sir Wiinston considered his words anti-war!

Of course, I could always be wrong... What do others think?

Steve
